Cedrus or cedar is a genus of coniferous trees in the plant family Pinaceae. If you feel like planting one, just know it will probably outlive you ! Varieties include Cedrus libani - the Lebanon cedar - or Cedrus deodara, the deodar cedar from himalaya. Cedrus trees can grow up to 30–40 m tall with spicy-resinous scented wood, thick ridged or square-cracked bark and broad, level branches. The shoots are dimorphic, with long shoots, which form the framework of the branches, and short shoots, which carry most of the leaves. The leaves are evergreen and needle-like, arranged in an open spiral phyllotaxis on long shoots, and in dense spiral clusters on shorter shoots - they vary from bright grass-green to dark green to strongly glaucous pale blue-green.

Plant my cedar

Planting a cedar is not trivial - you should make a small prayer before, because it is an offering to posterity. Another precaution to take: work your imagination, and plan in 30 years. Will your cedar, having taken 20 meters in height, and 12 meters in width be at ease? Or too stuck to the house / neighbor's house / all the garden. Plant your cedar in deep soil, draining, even in limestone, in full sun. Cedars hate stagnant water. Plant in winter. Dig a hole deep enough, twice as large as the root ball, without mixing the layers of the soil. If the nurseryman has not done it, cut the branches so as to keep an "arrow", that is to say to have the highest branch vertical. Place a pole at the bottom of the hole, facing the prevailing winds: you will fix it to the trunk with a flexible link after planting. Plant without burying the base of the trunk of the cedar, putting back the layers of earth in order. Tamp the soil around the roots with your foot as you go so as not to leave a pocket of air. Form a basin for watering and water abundantly.

Water my cedar

Water regularly and copiously for a few weeks after planting if you made it late enough. After, you will not have to worry anymore.

Prune my cedar

The cedar trees pruning, you can shape them into bonsai. Nevertheless, it is not necessary prune them, except the first year after planting if you find that they grow two summits instead of one. In this case, remove the weakest during the winter.

Unprop my cedar

After two years, remove the stake, which has no use anymore and may damage the bark.
