Identify my corn salad

The corn salad (there are different varieties) has tender green leaves arranged in partially erect rosettes. It is a biennial plant that produces small white flowers in umbel in spring.

Sow my corn salad

Sow in ordinary soil, in semi shade. Make small furrows (not more than two cm deep) spaced 20-30cm, in which you sow your seeds. Do not sow too tight, you will only keep one plant every 5cm. Small tip to succeed: cover with a thin layer of compost, or tamp your seedlings well with a small board, to put the seeds in contact with the soil.

Water my corn salad

Water much the first month, then it will become useless to water unless your lettuce is under cover or in pot, in which case check the moisture of the substrate twice a week. Avoid watering the foliage directly.

Thin out my corn salad

After emergence, thin the plants, leaving only one plant every 5 centimeters to facilitate their development. You can of course immediately transplant the plants that you have clarified on new lines!

Dibble my corn salad

If you have purchased corn salad in pots, fill it every 10 cm in a hole made with the dibble in ordinary, not too sunny soil.

Mulch my corn salad

Mulch your corn salad, it will keep it away from the coldest weather. Install the mulch after thinning out.

Fertilize my corn salad

Fertilize your garden as a whole, in November, by a decomposed manure, compost not necessarily very decomposed. Cover it with a mulch of leaves and wood (not to bring only nitrogen elements that unbalance the soil too much)

Remove my corn salad

When your corn salad starts to make flowers, you can tear it to free up space in the kitchen garden!

Reap my corn salad

Harvest your corn salad as needed, about 4 to 5 months after sowing, usually between September and April.
